Morel Mushrooms
form North America's Great Lakes Region

These mushrooms, from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and
Michigan
are available for a very short season in comparison to those
found in the North West Mountain Region. They can only be found if the weather
has provided the right mixture of precipitation and enough sun to warm the
ground.
Here in the Midwest, (Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin)
these mushrooms bring back memories of youth and family to many, and
are prevalent in the spring time following the first thunder storm of the year.
Usually, if the lilacs come into bloom, so are the morels. The ground
temperature and moisture
have to be in balance to have a bountiful harvest. They must be found before
the
ground cover takes over the forest floor, and before the canopy from the trees
shade the floor,
and before the temperature hits 80 degrees f.
for three days in a row.
These are the morels that many people in Indiana favor from the
rich in nutrient
soils of the Northern Midwest. The early harvest is black (figure 1 & 1a - I believe the
most earthy and
robust), then gray (figure 2), then blonde (figure 3 - almost sweet in flavor), and finally the wafer
thin large white.
For this reason the Great Lakes Morels are less abundant and available
for a shorter harvest season and are also slightly more pricey.
